Lets hear from our team

My name is Natalie and I completed my Masters of Educational and Developmental Psychology through Monash University in 2020. I completed my final block placement at Solution Psychology as a provisional psychologist and then began working at Solution Psychology as an early career psychologist.

The transition from being a student to a registered psychologist was a steep learning curve. I was very grateful to be part of a practice that provided so much supervision and also personal support. The team at Solution Psychology is one like no other and sometimes I forget that this is not the norm at other private practices.

What I enjoy most about working in private practice is the opportunity to develop ongoing relationships with clients and their families. I also have a diverse caseload which allows me to support clients with varied clinical presentations. At Solution Psychology, I continue to receive ongoing supervision and professional development and am working towards my educational and developmental endorsement. I was supported in my decision to have two workplaces and am also trusted to take control over my own calendar and caseload.

What I like most about working at Solution Psychology is that I am always surrounded by other psychologists and support staff. I rarely feel alone or isolated and know that there is always someone available. The other psychologists at Solution Psychology offer a breadth of experience and are always willing to share this with others.

Something that I found challenging as an early career psychologist in private practice was the business aspect of the job. Like many who choose or are called to a career in psychology, my goal was to help and support vulnerable clients and this was driven by my personal values. When starting out in private practice I found it challenging to charge clients for their session as monetary gain was never a strong value of mine. By identifying this clash in values and seeking support, I was able to learn more about the business structure of private practice which is fundamental in being able to provide ongoing care for my clients.

As an early career psychologist at Solution Psychology, I feel as though I am on the right track to developing a meaningful and lasting career helping and supporting young people and families who need it most.

Natalie Mizzi

Solution Psychology Graduate

Whenever I thought about private practice the first thing that came to mind was, “That would be so isolating.” For that reason, I stayed away from the private practice world for the first several years of my career. I had been working as part of a team of school psychologists for quite some time before feeling like I was ready to try something different. I wanted to be able to do more for my clients, to provide more long-term support and I loved the idea of being able to work more closely with parents and families. I knew that private practice was most likely the setting in which I would be able to do the type of work I was wanting to do, but did that meant I would have to be working in isolation? So, I did some searching and came across Solution Psychology. It appeared to be very different to the picture I had in my mind. It seemed team-oriented; it seemed supportive; it seemed collaborative; it seemed fun… it seemed like exactly the place I wanted to be! Having been at Solution Psychology for several months now I can more confidently say it is team-oriented; it is supportive; it is collaborative; it is fun… it is exactly the place I want to be!

Despite being a senior psychologist with years of experience, frequent and regular support is still provided by Melissa, fellow senior psychologists/mentors and the wider team at Solution Psychology. Going to work in such a nurturing and supportive environment is invaluable no matter how many years of experience you may have. There’s always more to learn and room to grow and Solution Psychology is the perfect environment to do so.
